AGA Presentation Dinner 2023

A very successful Army Golf Association Presentation Dinner took place last night at the BT Tower.

The following trophies have been presented; congratulations to the recipients, these were thoroughly deserved.

  • Men’s Player of the Year – Sgt Matthew Bruce-Smith AGC (SPS)
  • Women’s Player of the Year – Sgt Kirsty Kennedy RE
  • Women’s Players’ Player – SSgt Glynn-Galbraith AGC (SPS)
  • Inter Corps League Div 1 Winners – Royal Logistic Corps
  • Inter Corps League Div 2 Winners – Royal Armoured Corps

As well as presenting some well-deserved trophies, we took the opportunity to say goodbye and thank you to one of Army Women’s Golf’s stalwart; Maj Sue Lambert AGC (ETS).

Sue played her first Inter Service Champs at Hayling Island in 1989. This was well before the evolvement of the Inter Services as we know it now. The women played off handicap on separate courses to the men. When she took over the role of Secretary of women’s golf for the WRAC on a “voluntold” basis, Sue reminisces that she knew nothing about the sport and had to buy a book on the rules and various formats of the game to ensure she could perform her duties.

She was instrumental in bringing WRAC golf into the AGA, and in 2000, after 11 years, she finally handed the captaincy over to Mary Woollard. At the end of Mary’s tenure however, there was a distinct lack of takers for the role and so Sue returned to captain the team again for another year in 2002. This coincided with the inaugural joint Inter Services with the Men at Celtic Manor. Sue played her final Inter Service Champs as a regular officer in 2006 at Gullane in Scotland (we’ll gloss over the missed flight!).

After a break from service golf, Sue joined the Reserves in 2015 and was welcomed back into the fold. Since then Sue has played in a further 6 championships.

As previously mentioned, Sue has been an absolute stalwart for women in golf and we certainly owe her a great deal of thanks for laying those early foundations, which allowed those following to build the team into the “force to be reckoned with” that it is now.

For 25-year commitment to Army Women’s Golf – Maj Sue Lambert, thank you!

And many thanks to BT for all their support and for providing their amazing venue!

We look forward to seeing everyone again when 2024 season starts.
